The number FORTY is found several times in scripture.
Noah Genesis 7:4 …I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
Moses – Book of Exodus – a deliverer. He delivered the people from the bondage of Egypt
40 years in the palace of pharaoh – Acts 7:23
40 years in Midia – Acts 7:30
40 years in the wilderness –
Exodus 24:18 And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and got him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights. (First time- before golden calf). This was when Moses originally received the Ten Commandments.
Exodus 34:28 Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. (second time-after golden calf) Since Moses broke the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments on them, he went again into the mountain.
Deuteronomy 9:18, 25 And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger….. Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the LORD had said he would destroy you. (Another reference to the second time Moses went into the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments.)
Numbers 13:25 They (12 men) returned from searching of the land after forty days. Only 2 brought back a good report – Caleb and Joshua Genesis 14:6. Caleb was forty when he went to spy out the land of Canaan (Genesis 50:4)
Numbers 14:33-34 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years…After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years
Joshua – a military leader. Moses was supposed to take the people to the promised land and God was going to GIVE it to them. But they lacked faith. Now they would enter the promised land and they would have to fight to take it.
Joshua 4:13, 5:6 About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of Jericho….For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD….
Judges – God spoke through them, the people came to them with disputes
The land had 40 years of rest while each was judge:
Othniel – Judges 3:10
Deborah – Judges 5:31
Gideon – Judges 8:28
Judges 13:1 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.
Eli judged Israel 40 years. He died when he was told that the Philistines had captured the ark of the Lord. 1 Samuel 4:18
1 Samuel 17:16 Goliath challenged the Israelites morning and evening for 40 days before David came to the camp and accepted the challenge
Samuel was the last judge. The people demanded a king (1 Samuel 8).

Saul – Acts 13:21
David – 2 Samuel 5:4
Solomon – 1 Kings 11:42
Jonah warns Nineveh that Nineveh would be overthrown in 40 days
Matthew 4 – Jesus fasted 40 days and 40 nights before the devil took him into the wilderness to be tempted
Acts 1:3 Jesus was seen for 40 days after the resurrection, before his ascension
