Seven Things Jesus Said on the Cross

  • Luke 23:34

Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

  • John 19:26-27

Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing by.

Jesus (to his mother): Woman, behold your son!

Jesus (to the disciple): Behold your mother!

And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

  • Luke 23:42-43

When one of the malefactors said, Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

Jesus: Truly, today you shall be with me in paradise.

  • Matthew 27:46 (also found in Mark 15:34)

Jesus: Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?

(that is to say, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?)

  • John 19:28-30 (Jesus says two things in this passage.)

Jesus knew that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled.

Jesus: I thirst.

Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

Jesus received the vinegar.

Jesus: It is finished.

  • Luke 23:46

Jesus cried with a loud voice, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

Having said this, Jesus gave up the ghost.
