Wise Men & Warnings in Dreams

Matthew 2

The Wise Men (vs 1-12)

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, wise men came from the east to Jerusalem.

The wise men: Where is he that is born King of the Jews? We have seen his star in the east and have come to worship him.

When Herod heard these things, he was troubled and all Jerusalem with him. Herod gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together and demanded of them where Christ should be born.

The chief priests and scribes: In Bethlehem of Judaea, for it is written by the prophet, And you Bethlehem, in the land of Judea, are not the least among the princes of Judea: for out of you shall come a Governor, who shall rule my people Israel. (Micah 5:2)

Then Herod privately called the wise men and diligently inquired of them what time the star appeared, and he sent them to Bethlehem.

Herod: Go and search diligently for the young child; and when you have found him, bring me word that I may come and worship him also.

The wise men departed after they had heard the king.

They saw the star, which they had seen in the east, and rejoiced with exceeding great joy when they saw it. The star went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they entered the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother and fell down and worshipped him. When they had opened their treasures, they presented to him gifts of gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, the wise men departed into their own country another way.

Warned in a Dream (vs 13-18)
When the wise men departed, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.

Angel: Arise and take the young child and his mother and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word, because Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

When Joseph arose, he took the young child and his mother by night and departed into Egypt. They stayed there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. (Hosea 11:1)

When Herod saw that he was mocked of the wise men, he was exceedingly angry. He sent forth and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.

Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. (Jeremiah 31:15)

Another Dream (vs 19-23)

When Herod was dead, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt.

The angel: Rise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead who sought the young child’s life.

Joseph arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus reigned in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, Joseph was afraid to go there. He turned aside into Galilee, and he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
