Signs of the End

Mark 13:1-13 (Also found in Matthew 24:1-14 and Luke 21:5-19)

Jesus went out of the temple.

One of his disciples: Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!

The gospel of Luke says they spoke of the temple, “how it is adorned with goodly stones and gifts.” (21:5)

Jesus: Do you see these great buildings? There shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down.

As Jesus sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew spoke to him privately.

Peter, James, John and Andrew: Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?

The gospel of Matthew expresses it more clearly. “What shall be the sign of your coming and of the end of the world?” (24:3)

Jesus: Take heed lest any man deceive you, for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ and shall deceive many.

The gospel of Luke adds, “and the time draws near: therefore, do not go after them.”

And when you shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be troubled: for such things must be, but the end shall not be yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in diverse places, and there shall be famines and troubles:

The gospel of Luke adds, “and pestilences and there shall be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.” (21:11)

These are the beginnings of sorrows.

But take heed to yourselves:

“Before all of these” (Luke 21:12)

They shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues you shall be beaten: and you shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.

The gospel of Luke says, “for my name’s sake. And it shall turn to you for a testimony.” (21:12-13)

And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

Matthew 24:14 states it more clearly. “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness to all nations; and then shall the end come.”

But when they shall lead you and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what you shall speak, neither premeditate: but whatever shall be given to you in that hour, that speak: for it is not you who speaks, but the Holy Ghost.

Brother shall betray brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents and shall cause them to be put to death. And you shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he who shall endure to the end, the same shall be saved.

The gospel of Luke says, “And you shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake. But there shall not an hair of your head perish. In your patience you possess your souls.” (21:17-19)
