Again Luke offers unique information in his gospel.
Jesus entered a certain village: and a woman named Martha received him into her house. Martha had a sister named Mary, who sat at Jesus’ feet and heard his word.
Martha was cumbered with much serving.
Martha: Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Bid her to help me.
Jesus: Martha, Martha, you are careful and troubled about many things. But one thing is needful; and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
We later find out that this certain village is Bethany. We find out that Mary and Martha have a brother named Lazarus, whom Jesus raises from the dead. (John 11:1-46)
In his final days, Jesus attends a supper. Martha is serving and Mary anoints Jesus’ head and feet with an expensive oil. Jesus says, “She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial.” (John 12:1-12 also found in Matthew 26:6-13 and Mark 14:3-9)
