Crumbs Under the Table

Matthew 15:21-28 (Also found in Mark 7:24-30)

This story gives us all of the details of a news story. It answers our questions of who, what, where, when and why. Other events leave some of these details out. This story also has the layout for a novel: the characters are introduced, a dilemma arises, we have a resolution of the dilemma and then the ending. Let’s look at these details.

After the incident about the unwashed hands.

Jesus is beginning his third year of ministry. Remember we can tell the years of Jesus’ ministry by the passovers. When Jesus recently fed the 5,000, “the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.” (John 6:4)

Jesus departed and went into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon (and entered into a house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid – Mark 7:24).

A woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and (fell down at his feet. The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation. – Mark 7:25-26)

Woman: Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

Jesus answered her not a word.

The disciples: Send her away; for she cries after us.

Jesus: I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Woman: (worshipped him) Lord, help me.

Jesus: (Let the children first be filled: for – Mark 7:27) it is not right to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.

The woman: Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. (Mark 7:28 says the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs)

Jesus: O woman, great is thy faith: (For this saying go thy way – Mark 7:29) be it unto you even as you wilt. (The devil is gone out of thy daughter – Mark 7:29)

And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
Happy Ending: Mark 7:30 says And when she arrived at her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

This is a question everyone has to answer in their own heart. Peter answered this question in Luke 6:68-69. We believe and are sure that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. He has the words of eternal life.
