Luke 9:1-6 (Also found in Mark 6:7-13,30-34)
1] Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases.
2] And he sent them (forth by two and two – Mark 6:7) to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
3] And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey (save a staff only – Mark 6:8), neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece (but be shod with sandals – Mark 6:9).
There is a little controversy surrounding this passage since Luke says don’t take a stave (staff) and Mark says don’t take anything except a staff
4] And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
5] And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. (Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. – Mark 6:11)
6] And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every
Mark says they “preached that men should repent.”
Mark also says they “cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.”
While the apostles were going through the towns preaching and healing, John the Baptist was beheaded.
Luke 9:10 And the apostles, when they were returned, (gathered themselves unto Jesus and – Mark 6:30) told him all that they had done (and what they had taught – Mark 6:30). And he took them (by ship – Mark 6:32), and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
Mark 6:31, 33-34 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.
33] And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.
34] And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd…
