Paying taxes

It is tax season again. Many of us are struggling with the burden of taxes this year. What does Jesus have to say about paying taxes? He addressed the question of taxes on two separate occasions.

Jesus pays taxes
Matthew 17:24-27

And when they arrived in Capernaum,
they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said,
Does not your master pay tribute?
Peter said, Yes.

And when Peter would have come into the house,
Jesus prevented him, saying,
What do you think, Simon?
Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute?
of their own children, or of strangers?
Peter answered, Of strangers.
Jesus said to him, Then are the children free.

Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them,
go to the sea, and cast a hook,
and take up the fish that come up first;
and when you have opened his mouth,
you shall find a piece of money:
that take, and give to them for me and thee.

Render unto Caesar
Matthew 22:17-21

Tell us therefore, What do you think?
Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said,
Why do you tempt me, you hypocrites?
Show me the tribute money.

And they brought to him a penny.

And he said to them, Whose is this image and superscription?

They say to him, Caesar’s.

Then Jesus to them,
Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s;
and unto God the things that are God’s.
